www.iofilm.co.uk - : Despite everything the film has to offer, it mostly left me cold. Ryder went beyond powerful, evil and scary, ending up simply unbelievable. For me, this undermined the entire concept and meant that I never cared sufficiently about what was happening. The blame cannot be placed on Hauer's performance, Harmon's direction or even Eric Red's script, it's just that for me it didn't quite work. I can easily see how it does for many people and why The Hitcher is held in such high esteem.  more...
www.toxicuniverse.com - : I remember first seeing The Hitcher back in 1986, at my local four screen theater. I was only thirteen or fourteen at the time, but fate must have been smiling on me that night because I went right past the ticket seller without a second glance and walked into the R rated film unchallenged (since it was such a small theater, there was no usher to tear your tickets—they tore them right at the box office—thus eliminating a potential second checkpoint to keep underage kids out of R rated films). I wasn’t sure what to expect as I sat there in the half-light, waiting for the show to begin, but an hour and a half later, I left feeling shaken and excited—The Hitcher had delivered the goods.  more...
www.movie-vault.com - : Jim (Howell), who works for a car transportation company, is driving a vehicle to California. Bored and tired on a rainy night, he pulls over and gives a wandering stranger, John Ryder (Hauer), a ride (''My mother told me never to do this), in hopes of keeping him awake at the wheel. Ryder (get it?), is strange, and eventually he reveals a knife, commanding Jim to keep driving him onwards. Jim, bawling like a baby, finally manages to bump Ryder out of the car, whereupon he yells like an idiot and curses Ryder, who is rolling helplessly along the sandy highway stretch.   more...
www.toxicuniverse.com - : Who hasn’t responded, “I’ll just KICK HIM IN THE BALLS AND RUN LIKE HELL,” when asked what you would do if confronted with a psychopathic killer? Sounds logical enough. Some nutcase comes at me with his knife, I’m sure I’ll find time for many fantasies of going Jackie Chan on his ass. If only real life was more like the movies, man.  more...
